Our Values, Our Texas is a statewide nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to reversing massive budget cuts and providing adequate funding for all essential state services. To accomplish this objective, we will help start a discussion among the people of Texas about our state budget crisis and options we have for resolving it. We are particularly focused on working to provide adequate funding for Texas public schools, which have been seriously damaged by the $5.3B in funding cuts approved by the Legislature in 2011.
Texas voters must be engaged in the political process if we are to resolve our state budget crisis. In 2010 Texas had the lowest voter turnout in the United States (only 38%). Unfortunately this trend has gotten worse. Only 15% of the eligible voters voted in the May 29 primaries, which means that 15% of voters decide who the candidates will be in the general election. If you think our choices in most elections are a choice between the lesser of two evils, we want you to help us!
Currently a minority of political zealots controls the political process in Texas. It's time for the silent, moderate majority of Texans to take back control of our state and return common sense to the process of developing our state budget.
